Blueberry Acres U-Pick

We are closed for the 2007 Season.

We, at Blueberry Acres and Nova Agri Inc., wish to thank you for a wonderful successful season.

We look forward to serving you again next summer!

Congratulations to:

ANNE HARE

WINNER of “Guess How Many Blueberries?”

Blueberry Acres U-Pick spreads over 10 acres in the Annapolis Valley and surrounds our "Between The Bushes" Restaurant. There is ample parking for all.  Washrooms and refreshments are also available onsite at  "Between the Bushes".

Don't bother to bring pots or containers for picking. Our scales are calibrated to our own boxes - which we supply to U-Pickers free of charge.

Getting Here

It is easy to get to Blueberry Acres from anywhere in Nova Scotia!

First find Highway 101 that runs between Halifax and Yarmouth through the Annapolis Valley, and head towards Kentville/New Minas (you can also take Highway 1 - the scenic Evangeline Trail if you are touring). We're only about 10 km (6 miles) from the highway down Middle Dyke Road.

·         from Highway 101, take Exit 12 and turn north at the bottom of the ramp

·         go straight through three sets of lights and one stop sign

·         at the second stop sign, turn left and go approximately 100 feet and turn right.

·         travel about 1 km and look to your left to see the blueberry bushes..
That's us in the large gold building with the burgundy trim. We are at 1225 Middle Dyke Road. Come on in!

If you're coming in from Highway 1, through New Minas, you are already on Commercial Street. At the set of lights right before the Shell gas station turn north. Now you are on Middle Dyke Road and only have one more set of lights and two stop signs to go from there.

If you are a visitor to the province of Nova Scotia, you might want to stop at a Tourist Bureau (look for the ' ? ' signs) and pick up the Nova Scotia Doers and Dreamers Tour Guide. This is a fantastic resource, and it will provide maps and locations of the sites of interest, including picnic stops along the way. Simply turn to the Evangeline Trail section and it's all laid out from there! You can follow the Evangeline Trail (Highway 1) from Halifax, but of course it will take you longer to get here. Or, you can get on Highway 101 and exit at any point you wish to join with the Evangeline Trail.

Types of Berries

No need to bend over and break your back at Blueberry Acres; all of our U-Pick berries conveniently grow on high bushes within easy reach. These are cultivated varieties of berries that grow large and sweet - so it doesn't take long to fill up your box!

At the Blueberry Acres  U-Pick we have 7 varieties of Blueberries for you to pick from. They include: Blue Crop, Blue Ray, Bonus, Berkley, Duke, Jersey, and Spartan. Each berry offers a unique flavor and is equally nutritious and delicious!

At Blueberry Acres U-Pick, 10 minutes of picking will give you enough berries for  two pies!

What to Expect

When you arrive  come in and follow the signs to the U-Pick our friendly cashier Nancy can answer your questions. Also, our bus will be available to take you to the field.

Taking the bus is fun! You will have a chance to meet our friendly driver, Bill, who is great at telling stories and answering any questions you may have.

When you arrive at the field, you'll be greeted by Bill's wife, Dot, who is our Field Supervisor. Dot will be happy to get you situated and ready for a wonderful Morning or Afternoon of picking!

As mentioned previously, our scales are calibrated for our boxes, so you will need to use these at check in. We supply boxes free of charge ... on any visit. If you do happen to bring back and reuse your boxes, we'll take $1.00 off of the total price of your berries if you purchase a minimum of 6lbs. This is our way of encouraging recycling.

You can pick to your heart's content ... from 9 to 5 if you prefer, but, that's an awful lot of berries! It will take only about half an hour to pick a 10 lb. box of these big, juicy blueberries.

When you are ready to leave, just let Dot know and she will radio Bill to come and pick you up and take you back to Between the Bushes. That is where you will "weigh and pay".

Prices for U-Pick berries $2.00/lb

Best to come prepared for everything short of a thunderstorm - assuming of course that you've checked the weather report and know that this is not in the forecast.

Dress in layers so that you can adjust your clothing to suit changes in temperature. Be sure to bring hats, sun screen and possibly insect repellent (if you are picking later in the day)

The mean daily temperatures in our area are about:

·         August: 20°-25°  Celsius (70°-80° Fahrenheit)

·         September: 18°-20°  Celsius (66°-70° Fahrenheit)

Temperatures are considerably cooler before noon and hotter mid-day.

Testimonials

Here's proof our Love Life Country Magic blueberries are
the best in the land!
This is what our customers are saying:

·         "I am a blueberry lover and eat them any time I can get them. I want you to know you have the BEST blueberries I ever tasted. I got the last half pint container about October 20, 2000. When will they be out for 2001? I am waiting"

·         "My wife Theresa and I agree: your Nova Blue blueberries are outstanding in flavour, size and appearance. As an addition to our morning cereal, they add quite a treat to start the day!
We have blueberries from our states of North Carolina, Delaware and Connecticut, but yours are super. Theresa is going off to the supermarket this morning to shop for Nova Blues!"

·         "Thought that you might be interested in knowing how distant your product travels in the retail market. Wish these berries could be available 12 months of the year!"

·         "I wish to compliment you on the quality of your blueberries that I bought last week in our local IGA store. The blueberries were a good size, excellent tasting, firm and nicely packaged. We try to eat blueberries everyday. Thank you for your excellent product. We will look for them again when we shop"

Storage and Handling

Blueberries are one of nature's true convenience foods since they simply need to be washed and enjoyed. Fresh blueberries keep longer than any other berry when refrigerated. To freeze blueberries, simply arrange dry fresh berries in on layer on a cookie sheet, with sheet then placed in the freezer. When frozen, berries can be transferred to plastic bags or freezer containers. Remember, both fresh and frozen blueberries should be rinsed and drained just before serving.
